A short viral i made to celebrate a friends 21st birthday. I sarted with just the glowing bars then it just developed into this tacky (in a good way) 80's vibe. coupled with New Order and jobs a good'un . I like things that glow. Jamie

we did a short breif before the end of the year where we had to create a cornish souvenir ( not sure if there were more guidelines to that)
i went about this by playing with cyanotypes, this way i could create images made by sun, sea ( and sand, this isnt visible in the final images) which is what cornwall is largely known for..
heres some photos of the process and results.

sadly the cyanotypes arent done that well and the image is a bit Rob Ryan, origially i did a different image with type made out of sand however i did it to big and it didnt quite work so i did a last minute ( morning before deadline) Rob Ryan job..
may try and redo it before the start of next year..

After getting a bit carried away cleaning out my computer ive lost most the photos of this project..
so, lets try and describe it a bit more in writing, the breif was focusing on how design doesnt need to be all about sellign people things they dont need. i chose a breif within this of creatign a publication with 10 things you need to know abotu a contraversial subject with an aim to enthuse readers, i chose the death penalty and instantly regretted it as its depressing and all my graphicsy freinds were having fun creating beautiful journals about colour, however i decided i should push on with it as il never always get lovely breifs " theres no such thing as a bad client, only a bad designer",( or something along those lines, Bob Gill).
enough rambling on... i decided narrowed the death penalty down to US capital punishment as its highly contraversial being a major superpower, after research i realised 2 things, a lot of facts are hidden away under technical talk, and the death penalty is a very complicated personal issue as peoples lives are concerned and has to much emotion attatched to pin down to 10 facts...
so.. to tackle this issue i created a publication in the style of a collection piece of items left in a prisoners cell, these objects were documented in photographs, printed on heavy gloss and left loose leaf in the book, the book was made up of text describing these items and within it facts hidden typographically in an attempt to show the hidden nature of statistics on the death penalty.. the publication came with a poster and was held together by a delicate band saying life is precious that would have to be broken to acess the book, involving the reader...
rambled on for way to long here, i clearly need to get out..

RGB limited edition journal

As a brief I was asked to create a limited edition journal around the subject of RGB. My research lead me into quite a scientific and experimental pathway. I took concepts, experiments and
processes and translated them into visual responses that allowed me to further explore the effects of light and how it can be manipulated.

The journal contains 4 numbered articles, each exploring a different aspect of light. Alongside the articles a key explained each process relevant to the number.

The first article, titled bird in the cage, played on the use of after image to complete the words. If you stare at a red shape/letter on a white background for 20 seconds and then blink while looking at a white surface a blue 'afterimage' appears, very similar to what happens when you stare at a bright light. Using this after image process each word is completed. The final phrase that is read is - The Only Thing Worse Than Being Blind Is Having Sight But No Vision.

Article 2, titled The Colour Of Light, was an experiment using red, green and blue light to document the effect of different variations. I created 3d text from paper to enable shadows to utilize the light being cast.

Article 3, titled invisible screen, I used a slide projector and a piece of dowel. By focusing the slide on a screen, then removing the screen a focus point is created. By rapidly waving a piece of dowel at that focus point a crisp image can be seen, effectively creating a floating image. The image can be viewed due to the frequency of the moving stick, it is so fast that our eyes perceive the stick to be covering a large area when really it can only be in one place at a time.

And finally Article 4, titled Don't Believe Everything You See, I experimented with a magnifying lense. At certain distances and focal points a magnifying lense will flip what you are viewing through it. I used this process to manipulate the text on the page so that it became legible.

I brought an old bike from a guy a few months ago and have speant the last month or 2 doing it up for a summer trip around Holland, heres a few photos of the progress..

ok so its not particularly design related, however continueing in the style of doing things up were working on buying a website and doing that up a bit instead of this blog which isnt particularly pleasing on the eyes..
